Leena scrolled to a photo of Rania’s dining table, seven places set, a friend’s caption underneath: best night in ages. She counted the chairs twice, then read the caption a third time.
She hadn’t known about the dinner. She found out from the photo, two days after it happened.
This wasn’t a pattern. Leena is invited to almost everything, the birthdays, the school galas, the group trips to the lake house. She’d RSVP’d yes to three things that same week. But Rania’s dinner had happened without her, and now she sat on her couch with her phone tilted at an angle, as if a different angle might change who was in the frame. She scrolled back through her texts with Rania to see if she’d missed something, a message buried under other messages, an invitation she’d somehow let slip past her. There was nothing. Just the usual back and forth from two weeks earlier.
If Rania had texted that morning, Leena would have gone, even tired, even bored by the thought of it, because going was never really about the food or the company. Going was about being counted. The dinner itself, she knew even as she scrolled, would have been forgettable, bland food, conversation she’d have half-listened to. But she’d have shown up smiling anyway, and posted her own photo after, and felt, for a few hours, entirely accounted for.
Instead, she was on her couch, uncounted, staring at seven faces and wondering what she’d done, or failed to do, to end up as the eighth.
There is something particularly modern about knowing this much. Once, we simply didn’t know about most of the rooms we weren’t in. Now we can see the table, count the chairs, identify every person who made the cut. We can scroll backward and forward and, if we’re inclined, conduct a small audit of our own social standing from the couch.
Leena is invented, and so is Rania, but the feeling is familiar enough. She wasn’t short on invitations. She wasn’t short on friends. What she was missing was a single evening she didn’t even particularly want.
Why does someone with a full calendar still feel robbed by one empty square? What is the end game here, and at what number does anyone finally feel satisfied?
An Old Hunger
The psychologist John Cacioppo, who spent his career studying loneliness, compared it to hunger, a signal the body sends when a need isn’t being met. For most of human history, being cut off from the group was genuinely dangerous, and the ache evolved to send us back toward one another. When a friend says she felt a pang scrolling past photos of a gathering she wasn’t part of, she is describing something ancient and ordinary.
Hunger can be fed with the wrong things, though. You can eat a whole sleeve of crackers standing at the pantry and still be hungry, because what your body wanted was a meal and what you gave it was salt and crunch and the motion of your own hand. Invitations work the same way. Each one delivers a small, genuine jolt of being wanted, but the jolt fades before the envelope even reaches the recycling bin.
Psychologists have a name for the pattern, the hedonic treadmill, which describes how quickly we adapt to every good thing and drift back to where we started. Islamic tradition described it centuries earlier. The Prophet Muhammad said that if the son of Adam had a valley of gold, he would long for another, and nothing would fill his mouth but dust.
One of the Companions recalled that they later heard its echo in Surat al-Takathur, the chapter on the rivalry to pile up more. The appetite has no natural stopping point. It grows to meet whatever you feed it.
What the Sadness Is Actually About
The harder question is where the ordinary ache ends and something else begins. The difference seems to lie in what, exactly, a person is missing.
Imagine Sadia, who moves to a new town with a toddler and a husband who travels for work, and for months nobody asks her anywhere. She starts timing her grocery runs to the busiest hour of the day, just to stand near other people. Her sadness points at something real, a life with no one in it yet. It deserves every ounce of tenderness anyone could give it.
Leena’s sadness on the couch points somewhere else. She couldn’t tell you what she’d miss about Rania’s dinner, and the honest answer is nothing. What stings is that somewhere along the way, an invitation became a vote on her worth, and a missing vote feels like losing an election.
When you feel left out, can you name the person you wish you’d been with, and the conversation you wish you’d had? If you can, the sadness is telling you something worth listening to. Maybe it’s telling you to pick up the phone.
If all you can name is the event, the ache may be less about the people you’d have been with and more about what being on the list would have said about you, that you’re the kind of person worth including.
Most of us probably carry some mixture of both. We want the people, yes. But sometimes we also want the evidence. And those are not quite the same hunger.
Brené Brown draws a line that helps, between fitting in and belonging. In her telling, “true belonging doesn’t ask us to change who we are.” Fitting in does the opposite, reshaping you to get through the door. A person collecting invitations is often collecting proof of fitting in, and no stack of that proof ever converts into true belonging. You can be admitted to every room in town and still feel like a guest in all of them.
When the Room Itself Is the Problem
Picture Dana, who hosts a monthly dinner she calls moms’ night. Her friend Ruth, who has no children and wanted them, learns about it from a photo. Ruth isn’t angry, exactly. “I understand why,” she says. “I just didn’t know there was a list, and that I wasn’t on it.”
How do you draw that line?
Gatherings built around a shared season of life are good and old and necessary. New mothers need other new mothers. Widows need widows, converts need converts, and the Muslim women who found each other through altMuslimah needed a room of their own for reasons no one else could supply.
Sometimes a circle is closed because of what it’s for. Sometimes it’s closed because seven people became close and there are only seven chairs.
That may be one of the harder truths of adult friendship: exclusion can hurt without anyone having done anything wrong.
And then there are rooms whose boundaries communicate rank. The difference isn’t always easy to discern from the outside. Being left out because a gathering isn’t meant for you is one thing. Being left out because of where you stand is another.
Friendship doesn’t require us to invite everyone to everything, or to issue explanations for every dinner we host. But tenderness still matters. If you know an exclusion touches a particularly vulnerable place in someone you love, there are ways to handle it gently. Not because everyone is owed a chair at every table, but because friendship asks us to care about the people who aren’t sitting in them too.
The Cost Nobody Counts
The other cost to collecting invitations: time.
Oliver Burkeman reminds us that if you live to eighty, you get just over four thousand weeks, which is not very many Fridays. Every one spent at a dinner you didn’t want is a Friday you won’t get back for the three or four people who would sit with you in a hospital waiting room.
And then there’s the effect on the body. Imagine Leena a few months on, out five nights in one December week, spending the following Sunday in bed with a headache that isn’t quite a migraine and isn’t quite nothing. She has seen dozens of people and can’t remember the last time she had an unhurried conversation with anyone. She has spent the week arriving, leaving, figuring out what to bring, and where she needs to be next.
She was so busy being everywhere, she realizes, that she stopped being anywhere.
What Enough Actually Looks Like
What is the end game, then?
Islamic tradition has a word for what Leena is hungry for. Qana’ah is contentment, the settled knowledge that what you have is enough. The Prophet taught that true wealth is sufficiency in the soul, not a pile of possessions. That doesn’t mean refusing every invitation, or treating the wish to be included as a flaw to scrub out. It means choosing the gatherings that truly feed you and letting the rest go by without mourning them.
There is barakah in an hour well spent, a blessing that seems to stretch it. And how much of it can there be in an hour spent proving something to people who weren’t watching?
Maybe that is another way to understand what it means to save the date — to save some of the frighteningly finite dates of your life for the people, and the things, that you have already decided matter.
The last time we see Leena, it’s a Friday, and her phone is face down on the counter, screen dark, notifications piling up unread. She’s made a pot of tea, just for herself, and she isn’t checking who’s doing what tonight.
For once, that isn’t the question she’s asking.
